Media Owners and Their Relatives Must Not Threaten the Journalists

Skopje, 19 February 2019 – The Agency for Audio and Audiovisual Media Services condemns the conduct of the 1 TV owner’s son, Bojan Jovanovski, who had verbally threatened the journalist of the MAKFAKS Agency, Meri Jordanovska, because of her public criticism against the “Makedonski insajder” (Macedonian Insider) show, aired by the above TV station.

Any form of pressure or threat on the part of persons holding managerial positions or close to ones holding managerial positions, against journalists, constitutes jeopardizing and violation of the freedom of expression and information. Such phenomena affect negatively the freedom and independence of the media, lead to an occurrence of auto-censorship and contribute to deterioration of the democratic development of society.

As a reminder, in accordance with the Law on Media, the journalists have the right to present their own opinions and standpoints, in line with the professional rules of the journalist profession. On the other hand, the Law on Audio and Audiovisual Media Services imposes that, when performing their business activities, the broadcasters respect the independence, autonomy and responsibility of the editors, journalists and other authors in creating their programmes and making the editorial policies.
