Prime Minister Should Refrain from Making Discrediting, Labeling and Discriminating Statements

Skopje, 13 August 2019 – The Agency for Audio and Audiovisual Media Services strongly condemns today’s statement made by Prime Minister Zoran Zaev regarding the “Racket” case, which is problematic on at least three grounds.

Namely, the Prime Minister, as a holder of public office, tried to discredit a journalist, instead of accepting and respecting the role of the journalists as critics of the government’s work. Also, instead of manifesting the highest level of respect for diversity, he used derogatory labelling referring to the LGBT persons. With his statement, Mr. Zaev also disregarded the presumption of innocence.

The Agency wishes to remind the politicians once again that it is their duty to observe the European standards of freedom of information, respect diversity and refrain from using language that may undermine these values.
