Skopje, 5 March 2020 – The Agency for Audio and Audiovisual Media Services expresses concern over the six-month imprisonment suspended sentence against the Editor in Chief of Infomax, Aleksandar Mitovski, for revealing an official secret.

The imposition of prison sentences against journalists who report on topics of high public interest may lead to self-censorship, thereby violating the freedom of information and freedom of expression, as well as the wider public interest.

The Agency reminds that one of the crucial tasks of the media involves precisely the public scrutiny over the work of political and public bodies, thus guaranteeing their accountability and transparency. At the same time, we remind that the media must respect the professional and ethical journalistic standards when doing its job.
