Skopje, 31 July 2020 – The Agency for Audio and Audiovisual Media Services is concerned about the state of the freedom of information due to the decision of the Primary Public Prosecutor’s Office to file charges against the journalist and editor-in-chief of the “Business Leader” portal, Ljupco Zlatev, for publishing internal documents of the Security and Counterintelligence Directorate.

Informing about a case of possible abuse of a certain institution, which is the subject of a court trial, is one of the fundamental tasks of the free and independent media. Such public oversight guarantees accountability and transparency on the part of the state bodies.

The Agency, as it has done before, urges journalists to abide by the professional and ethical journalistic standards and to inform objectively and impartially, and calls on the institutions to bear in mind that initiating charges against journalists for publishing information has a negative impact on the freedom of the media and the public interest.
