Skopje, 13 October 2020 – The Agency for Audio and Audiovisual Media Services condemns the threats uttered by the director of the National Agency for European Education Programmes and Mobility addressed against the “A1on” online media outlet for publishing texts related to the EU projects implemented by this Agency.

The lawsuit threats used instead of presenting arguments proving the opposite or instead of exercising the right to correction or reply, pose direct pressure on the work of the media and constitute censorship attempts. Hence, all kinds of threats and pressures against journalists jeopardize freedom of information and are absolutely unacceptable.

At no point should one forget that the role of the media is to raise issues of public interest and they should be encouraged to perform their duties thoroughly and professionally and to inform the public in a timely manner. At the same time, media workers should adhere to their journalistic standards, verify the information before publishing them and take into account all relevant sources.
