The Prime Minister Should Refrain from Expressing Personal Views on the Media

Skopje, 17 January 2023 – The Agency for Audio and Audiovisual Media Services reacts strongly to Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski labeling of certain media outlets’ editorial policy and wishes to underline that public office holders should refrain from expressing personal, subjective views that undermine freedom of the media.

Holders of public offices should be aware of the responsibility they have and the weight of each of their publicly expressed words. Instead of using narratives that discredit and exert pressure on the media, they should be an example of responsible and professional behavior.

At the same time, the Agency wishes to remind that media’s role is to inform and raise questions concerning matters of public interest, which is why all relevant stakeholders in the state should invest maximum efforts to ensure a favorable environment for strengthening media freedom and editorial independence.
