2025 Media Literacy Days Kick Off in Skopje

Skopje, 17 November 2025 – The Media Literacy Network is kicking off the seventh edition of the 2025 Media Literacy Days, running from today until 24 November. Over twenty events will take place across the country, organized by the Network members and their supporters, with some available online. Through these activities, North Macedonia shall join the UNESCO Global Media and Information Literacy Week.

At today’s 2025 EU-Western Balkans Media Literacy Conference, organized by the Delegation of the European Union, Dr. Zoran Trajchevski, Director of the Agency for Audio and Audiovisual Media Services (AVMU), underlined: “This year, under the motto ‘You know – others might not. Your comment can make a difference’, the Media Literacy Days focus on critical thinking and personal responsibility in the digital space. Today, more than ever, it is not enough to simply recognize disinformation – we need to react, share knowledge, and engage as active citizens.”

This Conference is the flagship regional event of the European External Action Service in the field of media literacy. This year, the Skopje Conference also marks the official opening of the Media Literacy Days. EU Ambassador to North Macedonia H.E. Mr. Michalis Rokas stressed that in a dynamic media environment—where social media, artificial intelligence, and foreign interference reshape how citizens access and interpret information—it is essential to invest efforts in fortifying the collective response against disinformation and the influence of malicious actors.

Media literacy is one of the strongest tools we have to protect our societies. When people can recognize false content, critically assess content they encounter online, and seek reliable information, they become active guardians of democracy. This is, among other things, one of the reasons behind the EU’s European Democracy Shield, an initiative that strengthens our joint preparedness to counter manipulative information and build collective resilience,” Ambassador Rokas emphasized.

The conference will cover a wide range of topics, including: social media platforms as both part of the problem and part of the solution in countering foreign interference and disinformation; gender-based disinformation and digital hate; the importance of institutional response to threats from foreign interference and disinformation; artificial intelligence beyond chatbots: sovereignty and capacity-building for truth; the next generation and the platforms: navigating risks and opportunities.

For the needs of the 2025 Media Literacy Days, promotional video and audio spots have been produced in Macedonian, Albanian, and English. These spots are already airing across various media outlets to help inform as many citizens as possible about the upcoming events. This year, they will also appear on several video billboards throughout Skopje.
