Skopje November 11, 2013 – The Broadcasting Council held a public session on the topic “Gender and Media.” The event was opened by the President of the Council , PhD Zoran Trajchevski and the participants were also addressed by the Minister of Labour and Social Policy, Dime Spasov and the President of the Assembly Commission for Equality between Women and Men, MA Liljana Popovska.
The meeting was attended by stakeholders that play an active role in promoting and advancing equality between women and men in the Macedonian society – the creators of the National Strategy on Gender Equality 2013-2020 , representatives of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia, the EU Delegation in Skopje, NGOs and media representatives.
At the session, the findings of the research for the treatment of gender issues and the manner on which women and men are shown and presented in broadcasters’ programmes were depicted and a separate section of the website of the Broadcasting Council relating to gender and media was presented, through which citizens will be able to submit a complaint to the regulator, and the media will have access to the Handbook of the Council of Europe “Women and Journalists First”: the challenge for media professionals to realise the democracy in practice, to provide quality in journalism and stop gender stereotyping” and several other recommendations and resolutions that the Broadcasting Council translated into Macedonian.
